Activities

At The Shaw Centre we try to provide a wide range of activities.

We run group meetings monthly to ensure that we are providing activities that our group members enjoy.

In the centre we offer Drumming, Zumba, Sing Along, Cooking, Craft, Creative Writing, Free Time, Computer Time, Group Games, Drama with The Edge Theatre and so much more.

We are based at Redbank House they have a fantastic sensory room that we love to make use of.

We also enjoy dining out, shopping in the city centre and swimming.

Drumming

There are many benefits of drumming it can help to build and develop confidence - Playing loud requires guts and confidence.

Drumming also improves communication skills - drummers can express themselves without using words, which improves non-verbal communication skills.

Drumming can open your world to music styles and traditions from all over the world- drummers develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for the arts.

Zumba

Regular exercise can improve health, strengthen muscles and bones, builds confidence, concentration and social skills and most of all we have lots of fun moving to the music.

Bingo

Bingo is a firm favourite here at The Shaw Centre it can teach and maintain hand-eye coordination. The best players must be able to quickly cover numbers as they're called out. Regularly finding numbers and covering them can have a positive impact on coordination.

The thrill of winning keeps the game exciting. The prize may be small but who doesn’t want to win a prize?

Sing Along

Who doesn’t love a good sing song? As well as being fun for all, singing is particularly beneficial for improving breathing, posture and muscle tension. Learning new songs is cognitively stimulating and helps our memory, and it has been shown that singing can help those suffering from dementia too.

The Great Outdoors

Spending time outdoors can improve our mental and physical wellbeing.

When we’re not too busy in the centre, we get out as much as we can, we love to take a walk to the local park, into Manchester city centre and our local community.

During summer months we usually enjoy a fishing trip at Bradshaw Hall Fisheries with Andy Armrod.

Arts and Crafts

At The Shaw Centre we have our own room dedicated to arts and crafts.

When we become immersed in creating art our mind is able to break away from pressing and distracting thoughts allowing us to focus on the task in hand, all of our concerns are forgotten and we lower our stress levels.

Seeing the finished work provides a burst of self -esteem that brightens up our mood and gives us a sense of achievement.

Sensory Room

Spending time in the sensory room at Redbank House provides a moment of comfort and calm. The specially designed room helps to develop and engage the users senses in a safe environment that builds up their confidence and their ability. The user gets an unrestrained, non- threatening space space where they can explore at their own leisure.
